Every job has boring parts. Renaming files. Copying data from one spreadsheet to
another. Generating the same invoice every month. Checking vendor prices manually.
Most people do them by hand, every time, forever.

You do not need permission to automate them. You just need a script.

## Start with something that annoys you

The best automation targets are tasks you already hate doing. If you do it weekly,
it is worth automating. If you do it daily, it is urgent.

Examples:

 * Renaming downloaded files to match your naming convention
 * Extracting order numbers from emails and entering them in a spreadsheet
 * Checking whether competitor prices changed
 * Backing up a database to a folder
 * Formatting a report before sending it to a client

## Write a small script first

You do not need a framework, a database, or a deployment pipeline. A 20-line Python,
Bash, or Node script that runs on your computer is enough.

The goal is not to build software. The goal is to stop doing the task manually.

## Run it quietly

You do not need to announce it. Run the script, see that it works, and use the time
you saved for something else. When someone asks how you finished so quickly, show
them.

## The risks are small if you start small

Automate a read-only task first — something that only reads data and produces a
report. Do not start by writing a script that deletes database rows or charges credit
cards. Test it on a copy of the data, not the real thing.

## Show, do not sell

If you want your team to adopt the automation, demonstrate it. Run the script in
front of them. Let them see the time it saves. People resist process changes; they
do not resist saving two hours a week.

## The outcome

Automation does not replace your job. It replaces the boring parts so you can focus
on the parts that require judgment.

The developers who advance quickly are not the ones who write the most complex code.
They are the ones who quietly remove the tedious work from their team’s week.
